Ji Ji Sweet

Ji Ji Sweet is no novice to the DJ Game, but it also wasn’t her first choice as a profession. She is originally from Los Angeles and before she became one of the sweetest honeys on the 1’s and 2’s she was ballin on the basketball court. She was so good in high school that colleges were hunting her down. She decided to attend the University of Arizona. Now why would a big city girl want to put herself in the slow pace style of Arizona? It was her attraction to the serenity of Ji Ji Sweetthe landscape. A chance to experience something different then big city living. While she had several full scholarship choices, she decided to accept the one given by U of A. Spinning vinyl was not originally on her agenda for what she wanted to be when she grew up. During high school she actually was thinking of becoming a veterinarian. That would fade into the study of medicine. All the way up to her senior year of college she was majoring in Medicine. College students tend to change there major and lucky for us Ji Ji Sweet would be no different. She would eventually decided on Media Arts.
Apart of her was always deeply into music. She loved watching the DJs at parties do their thing. She also considers herself to be one who likes to go against the grain. As she made her change of majors she would make the one purchase that begins every DJs career. She got herself a set of Techniques. That was back in ‘95 and she is still cuttin it up with the same set. While in College she wrote for the college paper and after college she would continue her pursuits in the field of media while working for the TNT sports network. But her love for spinning music stayed with her.

Ji Ji would come to realize if she wanted to make any money she would have to get her hustle on. So she started selling mixed tapes. This would lead to her becoming a featured DJ on Hot 98 (KOHT). It is the typical story of someone giving her mix tape to the right person at the right time. In her case it was Chico and Pablo who gave her the opportunity to broaden her horizons into the world of radio. That was 1998.

Today she now puts it down not only on mix tapes, or Hot 98 but also 100.3 The Beat in Los Angeles. She keeps the listeners groovin throughout the mid-day with Nautica De La Cruz, Monday-Friday. On Friday nights you can catch her On The B-Side Show from 9pm-10pm. Then again on Saturday night with A-1 from 11pm to 2am.

One thing she has learned from being on the radio is not to bite the hand that feeds you. Early in her radio career at Hot 98 while selling mix tapes at a local swap meet she was told she could no longer sell at the swap meet. Not by the radio station but the swap meet organizers themselves. It seemed she was attracting to much attention from other vendors customers and they did not like that. She didn’t just stand there and try to sell the tapes she actually set up shop and would demonstrate her mixin skills for all to see. Well the day she was told she couldn’t come back to the swap meet she decided to diss the owners. That of course didn’t set well with the owners and they threatened to pull there advertising. Needless to say Ji Ji wasn’t allowed to voice her opinion again.

Ji Ji SweetAs with all strong people adversity only makes you stronger, and Ji Ji is continuing to strengthen her name on the streets of LA and across the country. She has been featured in The Source magazine (March 2001) as well as performed on BETs Rap-City (November 2001). Meanwhile she is fearless in her pursuit of working with big names like Ludacris and Missy Elliot. She seeks out corporate sponsors to assist in her ventures working the Car Show circuit selling mix CDs. A successful side business that is 8 years in the running. One of her favorite accomplishments is having won Tech.Nitions "West Coast DJ of the Year" for 2002.

If you were to ask Ji Ji who inspires her you would not be surprised by the response. She lists some of the top names like Coco Chanelle and Lazy K. Greenlantern was inspiration for putting together dope mix tapes. In fact she would use his tapes to help teach her how to get the turntables to blend the music just right. She also listens to DJ Curse and Hideo of the The Beat. Not to be out done she will listen to the competition just to be sure she isn’t caught slippin.

Ji ji SweetJi Ji’s current goals are to continue making contacts with top hip hop artists; getting her mix CDs into stores again; and as always pushing forward to brand her name on the streets. That is also what she believes an up and coming DJ should strive for. So as you can see this is one Hot DJ who practices what she preaches.
