As a PD, you have to realize that mix show Dj’s are not all Air Personalities; these guys may not have the communication skills or office skills you are used to dealing with. In some cases, mix show Dj’s are quiet shy people, many without the radio background that you might expect from an Air Personality or Programmer. Take an extra minute of two to make sure that the mixers understand EXACTLY what you are looking to get from them as far as show content and station responsibilities.
As a mix show Dj, you need to understand that your PD got his / her job from years of experience and hard work. Understand that they have a huge responsibility to the GM and parent company to get positive results in the area of ratings. If you think they can just turn the station over to you for an hour of your favorite records, your mistaken. Unless you have an underground show or a special time that you get to do your thing, (usually in the middle of the night) you have to understand how, why and when people are listening to your station. Ask questions, follow direction and communicate with your PD, Mix Coordinator, APD or whomever you report to. Your PD is all about business when it comes to station programming, speak to them that way. Drop the slang, return the phone calls and try not to be a pain in the ass. As soon as you become more trouble that your PD thinks your worth, your shows gone.... I’ve seen it happen to incredible mixers who just can’t get their act together. Don’t be late with your mixes, type the log, not hand written and include talk break times. Give your station a trouble free mix show, PD’s love that!
