Supply and demand:

As a PD, find someone at your station who is in tune with clubs and new mix show records if that person is not you. Find out what’s new and who is playing it where. There are some great Dj’s and producers out there seek them out. Having a hot local Dj at your station benefit your stations programming in ways you can’t imagine. They are very much in tune with what could be your next most requested record. Many Dj’s now have awesome production skills, go ahead and put those skills to use with special remixes, talk over beats, longer song intro’s or any other music related production that your in house Production Director might not be have the feel for.

As a mixer, you must come to realize that we are "a dime a dozen" now. Gone are the days when I could count on my fingers the number of mixers here in the Bay Area, much less in smaller markets. Don’t think just because you work at the hottest club in your area, or you sold 5000 cd’s last year that your station can’t replace you. Do what you think it takes to become a valuable member of the radio station. Send your PD a demo disc, show your production skills, and get to know people at the station. Think of what you can do to become a solid part of your radio stations programming, then go for it.
