DJ Tease

Miss DJ Tease is hot DJ out of California's, Bay Area. Having had the pleasure to speak with her on many occasions it was even more special to gain a deeper insight into this talented and educated DJ. DJ Tease is a lady who has used her skills to be where she is today.

1. Where did you grow up? I was BORN and RAISED in Sunny California's BAY AREA! To be specific, it’s a lil' city called "Sunnyvale", just 10 miles NORTH of San Jose. I've lived in Sunnyvale for my first 18 years, and then migrated to San Francisco, CA, where I went to San Francisco State University for college. After 4 years, I managed to finish a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing (FINALLY, all that hard work paid off because my college diploma says "GOVERNOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENAGER"...LOL!!). I am a NATIVE BAY AREA-ian... and don't plan on moving out....

2. Where do you live now? From 1999 - Present, I bounce up and down the Northern Californian Coast ... I still go to San Francisco State University where I am going to get my Masters (in BA), yet, I work in Sunnyvale (manage financial stuff for my parent's Filipino grocery store/play rental property manager) and still travel to Monterey CA on the weekends DJ for KDON 102.5 where I am a Mixer/DJ clubs there as well. Soooo, to answer this question.... San Francisco (Tue-Wed), then Sunnyvale (Thurs-Mon), and Monterey (Fri-Sat).... YES…I AM A FUCKIN NOMAD!!!!!

3. Where have you lived before? I have been a BAY AREA Native for all my life and I enjoyed (or should I say ENJOY) every one bit of it... I don't think I can imagine myself living anywhere else where the culture is so diverse, the people are so unique, and a place where all my FAMILY LIVES! Family is very important to me and I doubt I can live away from my family's nest...LOL!

4. What got you started as a DJ? Ohhh...here's a funny story for you: I went to a private high school named St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA. For all the students to "enrich" their education... every student had to be in some club at school... Well, my friend DARED me to sign up for the "RADIO" club... We had a lil’ radio station (yeah, with a signal that only reached around the fuckin' block).. called KSFH 90.5fm... I started out as an On-Air Personality, hosting my own radio show with my two lovely friends Kofi (aka Kof-Rock) and Valentino (aka Tino) and myself… "Teresa" as TERESA... (didn't have a name then)... We got to play our Hip Hop/R&B for our hour, etc.... but then there was a pair of turntables that was sittin' in the other studio that no one touched. I saw some old ass records and started diggin'... I found like the ORIGINAL 12'' to like.... BEASTIE BOYZ, SIR MIX-A-LOT, RUN DMC, SALT-N-PEPPER, etc... and just REALIZED I hit a GOLDMINE!!!! I asked my PD if I can bring ‘em home or have ‘em and he said "yeah, go for it"...I figured in the future I would be able to use them. Well, to GET TO THE PUNCHLINE OF THE STORY: After school, I would practice on these Technic 1200 turntables at our High School radio station with these old records (thank God they had intros..lol)... And FINALLY we started having a "MixShow" on our radio show... myself as "DJ TEASE" while Kof-Rock and Tino hosted it.. (We were soooo young and dumb, but we had the BEST TIME OF OUR LIVES!)... I was active in the Radio Club from sophomore year all the way to Senior Year. Senior year, I actually got a chance to assist the Program Director (who turned out to be Tino) and bossed these young Freshman/Sophomores around... it was great! It was the first time i had a taste of "radio".

With the "Senior APD" duties, I analyzed how the "real" radio stations did their jobs, like WILD 107.7fm (currently WILD 94.9fm) and 106.1 KMEL back in the days. I figured out was music was hot, what energy on-air jocks had, etc.... The first time I heard, "JAZZY JIM" on a radio station called HOT 97.7fm..... and he was BLAZIN' them TURNTABLE.....it was at THAT exact point where I WANTED TO BE A DJ/MIXER... You just don't understand...JAZZY JIM was HOT! (I guess I answered another question coming up)
5. How long have you been a DJ? I started DJing 1997, but SERIOUS about it 1998... I experienced different "DJ crews" out in the bay area... ‘98-‘99 I was with HIGHER ELEVATION PRODUCTIONS, where we did a whole buncha high school mobiles, but realized I wanted more. They will always be MY BOYS!. And then in 2000, my sister and I (her name is MIXTRESS) formed "DOSE - which stood for Divas Of Style Entertainment"... we had this "concept" to form an all-female DJ crew...but I've learned my lesson... you put a whole buncha FEMALES together ..You get DRAMATICS!!!! lol... I resigned as DOSE's Event Coordinator (booked gigs, etc), and Promotion's Director, and Assistant Manager in 2001. DOSE still goes strong today and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY SISTER (MIXTRESS) to death!!!! I decided to go off on my own cause I didn't like "crews". I'm NOT one of those DJs that always wants/needs to be in the spotlight, but I'm more of one of those DJs that want to make it "on their own". I didn't think I needed to be in a crew.... I just realized that I wanted to DO MORE CLUBS. I started DJING clubs in 2001 - present. Also, I ALWAYS had that "RADIO" experience from High School that I wanted to DEVELOP.... and eventually, I had another objective ------ > I WANTED TO BE A RADIO MIXER!! At the time, my sister MIXTRESS was a mixer for WILD 94.9. I have always been a guest DJ for their "special mix weekends", which I enjoyed doing. But their sister station "102.5 KDON" down in the Monterey area, had an opening for Mixers. I took the KDON JOB just like *snap* that! I was doing clubs in San Francisco/San Jose, and fulfilled my "radio" dream... I started KDON in 2002 and I am going strong ‘til now... (wow, its been 2 years?!).

6. What type of equipment did you start with and what do you use know? I was fortunate enough to start out with the industry standard of Technics 1200s. I practiced at the radio station (KSFH 90.5), until I finally got my own pair of turns. And YES, I AM SPOILED...I bought a used one with a mixer and my PARENTS bought me my 2nd one for my 17th birthday... hehehehe... I enjoy mixin’ on turntables, but recently, I have been using CDJs (the Pioneers)... MY BACK TELLS ME "I love you I love you I love you because I don't have to carry my record cases", however, MY MIND is telling me "NO NO NO, DON’T BE A SELL OUT AND CONVERT!"... However, talking to my Boyfriend that uses CDJs... he said "you're only a sell out if you started out with CDJs... honey, you paid you're dues, you are allowed to convert"... SOO, I compromised and I STILL spin on turntables, however, being on radio, I spike in the NEW HOT joints on my CDJ... hehehe!

7. What's your favorite Genre to play? I started playing the HOUSE/DANCE tracks because they were HOT when I started, but I never fully ignored the "Hip Hop' tracks at the time neither. I collected both (and stole the classic 12" from the high school radio station too). But to answer your question, I spin the RADIO MAINSTREAM HIP-HOP/R&B/Reggae joints. Hey...it’s RADIO..don't kill me!! LOL.. but honestly, I spin the mainstream stuff while respecting all forms of music - from Dance/House, Alternative, Rock, Classical, Adult Contemporary, and yes, even COUNTRY =) I basically love everything.... too much of one genre gets boring... after a club, I listen to my old Prince Album.

8. Where do spin? (stations, clubs) I DJ at various clubs... My home station is 102.5 KDON, and I have guest DJed at WILD 94.9's "special" long mix weekends... As far as my clubs go, I have DJed in San Francisco (Kelly's Mission Rock, Sound Factory, City Nights, Sno-Drift, Jullian’s inside Sony's Metreon), in San Jose (Club 175, The BackBeat, The Forum, Limelight, Club Icon) and in Monterey (Club Octane ‡ Voted #1 nightclub). I have worked with VARIOUS PROMOTERS, and it is them that truly give me street/club credibility.... RAW Entertainment, Simple Pleasurez, DOSE, Club Esseffe, ACR Productions, and many more.

9. What is your role at the station? KDON BITCH! lol... just kiddin’... I am a KDON QuickMixer where I spin Friday Nights 8-9pm (I kick off the Friday Night Street Party..yay), and Saturday Nights at various times. I am also the MixShow Director for the FEMALE DIVISION... currently, we have 1 female and that is MYSELF... lol..honestly, I wanted a promotion.. and my MixShow/MD gave me the promotion via email and was like "MIXSHOW DIRECTOR for the FEMALE DIVISION" and I said "there's only 1 female mixer" and he said "yeahh..EXACTLY!"...lol... My KDON family treats everyone with the up most respect.... and I LOVE THEM TO DEATH! I currently reign as KDON's QuickMixer Queen =)

10. What would you like your role to be in the future? I don't plan to DJ my whole life. I consider this as a really big "hobby". I hold down a fulltime job, as a Property Manager (honey... managing 36 units is ALOT!) while helping my parent's manage their Filipino Grocery store in Sunnyvale. Originally, I wanted to be the NUMBER #1 SALES person at that Clear Channel Radio station one day. What inspired me to be in Sales? The General Sales Manager for that Clear Channel division showed me a check for $18,000 off commission alone... yeahhh..MUST BE NICE! I enjoy making my mixes and doing clubs out there.... and that's probably as far as I’d go... but if JAY-Z asked me to be his opening DJ..I'd FUCKIN DO IT!
11. What are some of the craziest things that have happened to you while at the station? hmmmm..... THIS IS QUITE INTERESTING: My old MixShow Coordinator is a HUGE Philadelphia Eagles Fan.... like HARD CORE...and I am an SF NINER FAN.... (yes, I love the Bay Area!)... Well, last year, we made this huge bet and they made a big deal about it on air (the football game EAGLES vs. NINERS)... if his Eagles won, I would MIX my 8pm hour TOPLESS (well, with KDON bumper stickers covering my top body)...and if my Niners won, he would have to mix my 8pm hour in his boxers.... MY NINERS LOST... and yeah..END OF STORY!

Club? The BEST event that I have ever DJed for was for a charity. A promoter hired me to DJ pro-bono, which I actually didn't mind because it was going to a good cause. In the EAST BAY AREA...they had a lot of teenage crime going on...the city throw a peaceful event where a whole buncha teenagers would dance in this church gymnasium... They called it "EXODUS"... it was meaningful and meant that these teenagers were going to STOP THE VIOLENCE and LEAVE the DRAMA behind and CREATE PEACE within the community. THIS EVENT was MADDD CRAZY..... 1,500 teenagers with NO FIGHTS, all having a good time, all going to a good cause. The people that did the production for it (RAW ENTERTAINMENT) set up mind-boggling lighting/lasers/visual screen... It was a HUGE successful event... and it felt really good, knowing that these teenagers had a good time... I didn’t get paid money for it, but I got the biggest reward... having the "crowd response"… they responded to EVERY SONG I PLAYED....lol..I felt like a GODDESS...hehehe =) I’d do such an event again in a heartbeat.

12. Any Career highlights you would like to share? Someone you met, something you got to do for someone else. Anything. Besides that charity event "EXODUS" which I have mentioned above.... okay..this is sooooo CHEEEZY, but I totally loved it... Back in the 80's, in the Bay Area, we had this genre called "Freestyle" with artists such as The Cover Girls/Expose/Stevie B/Debbie Deb.... WELLL... I was tooooo young to appreciate their music back then. I always listened to them because my older cousins loved Freestyle. Well, recently... at Club Octane in Monterey, I had to OPPORTUNITY to OPEN UP for Debbie Deb who sang "Lookout Weekends".... I was excited because now that I was older.... I finally had a chance to meet her... lol... SOOO Cheezy, but yes, just ONE of my highlights that was sedimental and personal to me....

Mac Dre did a performance at one of our KDON Clubs in Monterey back in August and I was fortunate enough to meet the BAY AREA RAP LEGEND. Mac Dre was to the Bay Area as Tupac was to the West Coast. R.I.P Mac Dre and Tupac *sigh*

I've only been with the radio station for 2 years and as the years go on, I look forward to meeting a whole buncha artists... big or small =)

13. Who are some other DJ's that you feel are at the top of the game? Who influences you? I have always been a Bay Area DJ that has been HEAVILY influenced with BAY AREA Radio DJs. I respect all kinds of DJS... however, the most influential and inspiring DJs for me are (each followed by their quotes they have given me):

Jazzy Jim - WILD 94.9... He really "sparked the ignition" for me to be a Radio DJ... I first heard himat Hot 97.7 in 1993 and followed his radio career ever since. I finally got to meet him through my sister (who was mixing for WILD 94.9 at the time)... he's a very great guy and REMEMBERS EVERYONE’S NAME...including mine... how great is that? No matter what DJ you are - big or small - he remembers... I even wrote my COLLEGE ESSAY on this guy, who has been a true inspiration to me... ["It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice" - Jazzy Jim]

MajestiChris - WILD 94.9... As a Filipino DJ, he has inspired me to represent for the "Filipinos" and to be proud of whom you are. Every time I LISTEN to this guy...he gives me goose bumps... he puts so much flavor into his mixshow and I enjoy listening to him all the time. ALSO, this guy is the MOST MODEST DUDE you'll ever meet.... that's one trait/characteristic I appreciate in individuals ----> humility/being modest. He's not bigheaded about his skills... ["Don't Imitate, But Create" - MajestiChris]

Scotty Fox - 106.1 KMEL... He is ONE of my BEST FRIENDS who has supported me the most during my DJing Career. He gives me the best advice about how to improve on my mixing/djing skills...he has taught me a lot about the Radio Game/Industry and how to work it and also to listen to other DJs and learn from them what to do and what NOT to do. He has PUSHED me to go the extra mile and I am grateful to have him as my friend. HE KILLS it on his mixshow, and just like MajestiChris, I enjoy listening to his mixshow all the time... ["Just know your SHIT" - Scotty Fox]

Mixtress - DOSE.. She is my DJ SISTAH... hehehe... has been there to inspire me and to always motivate me to represent for all the ladies out there.... When we DJed clubs and I would be spinnin’... she would always protect me from that "one dude" that would bug me and try to hollla.. "DONT BE MESSIN WITH MY SISTER! MOVE BITCH!"... it would be quite hilarious and scares them away.... She has always been the outgoing girl DJ in the crew and the backbone. As I grew up in this radio industry, she has always taught me to use my "femininity" to my advantage, but you can only use it for so long ‘til you start lookin’ like a DJ SLUT.... She taught me to keep it real as a girl DJ... ["Don't be known for being a good girl DJ.. be known for being a damn GOOD dj " - Mixtress]

14. Do you have any Mix Tapes, CDs out? I have released promotional street mixtapes.. "TWISTED TRAXX Vol 1", and soon enough, working on TWISTED TRAXX Vol. 2". I make random mixtapes and give ‘em out as Demos/Promotional Items.... I am waiting for that moment in time where I am waiting at a stoplight and I HEAR MY MIX CD bumpin in the next car over.....

15. Give me your all time top 5 woooowww...this is a TOUGHY. There are waaay too many songs out there, but I will give you my #1 jams in different genres (well, I guess that’s a TOP 5)... Prince - "KISS", Shai - "Baby I’m Yours", Dre/Snoop - "Nothin’ But a G Thing", System F - "Out of the Blue", Nirvana – "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

16. Any groups in your area that you think need recognition? There are currently a lot of BAY AREA Rap Artists that have a lot of talent and represent the Bay to the fullest…. Just to name a few E-40, San Quinn, Frontline, E.A.Ski, The Team, Keak the Sneak

17. Any advice to give to new DJs wanting to get into radio? KNOW CONNECTIONS! I was mixing out on the streets and networking with a lot of people, who eventually referred me to KDON... I had the advantage over some DJs, I guess cause I’M a FEMALE (but I told them not to consider me based off Sex), but because I knew ALOT of other MIXERS down there. If there's one thing to learn.... be modest, don't be big headed and always, always, always... follow this rule: "Be nice to people on your way up because there's always a chance they might kick you down". I know there were some DJs that wanted to be at KDON and didn't get on because of their attitude...always have a good attitude and do it for the love...fame and future will come next.

18. Do you have your own website? Unfortunately, I do not have my own website, but I am featured on the station's website... www.kdon.com under "QuickMixers". Eventually, I might just have my own site!

19. Are you willing to take on gigs outside your area? Can someone book you? I WOULD LOVVVEE to travel outside my area. Even though I have been inside the Bay Area Box my whole life, it would be a huge/big opportunity to spin outside different cities, states, and shiiit.. EVEN COUNTRY! lol

20. Why do you think radio stations sometimes go through MixShow DJs like wild fire? There's a lot of POLITICS behind radio, which I have learned. I've seen DJs backstab other DJs, etc...such horrible thing to do(TOO MUCH TESTOSTERONE, ya hear!?..lol). But I think the major reason why mixers go in and out, because there's ALWAYS another DJ out there, wanting your spot, ALWAYS another DJ out there that's willing to come up, ALWAYS another DJ out there better than you. As a DJ, you have to continuously improve your skills and NOT TREAD WATER. If you tread water and dog- paddle... eventually, you WILL drown when the waves get bigger and tougher to handle. As a FEMALE DJ, I cannot rely on my advantage of being "FEMALE"... for one, I DON’T wanna be recognized as "good for a girl" DJ… I want to be recognized as a "GOOD DJ"... being female DOES have its advantages (ya know... security carrying my record cases inside the club for me...lol...), but in all honestly, it can be a disadvantage as well. Some DJs out there look down at me and criticize me even MORE because I AM FEMALE... it’s sorta a double standard... but majority of the time people go "oh shit, a DJ with TITS"… and I just laugh.

21. Do you think MixShow DJs get enough recognition? If no, why and how could it be change? (IS THIS A CRITICAL THINKING INTERVIEW?!) lol... I have actually never thought of that question... I DON’T think that MixShow DJS get enough recognition. I don't think the average listener goes "ohhh shit , its 8pm on Friday Night...I HAVE TO LISTEN TO DJ TEASEEE!". The average listener listens to 3 hours of radio a day, which means that within those 3 hours.... he/she could be listening to me or not be listening to me. And even if they DO listen to me, I don't necessarily think they pay attention to the MIXER"s name.... HOWEVER, I do get a lot of Instant Messages and Emails sent to me saying, "Hey..GOOD MIXES... DOPE SHIT GIRL"... It's good to know that people ARE listening. I use the radio as a promotional wheel and use it to my advantage.... IT’S THE STREETS that give you the credibility and THAT is why I enjoy DJing at various parties/clubs... for one, it should show the listeners that "YES, I AM A GIRL AND I DO EXISIT" and two.. "IT’S THE BEST PAYOFF... seeing people having a good time and enjoying themselves". It’s your job as a DJ to give these people a show and give them a good time... (by the way...have you ever read that book, "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life"?? Goood book, you should read it!) SHIT...what was the question again? Ahhh... I guess to answer the question... I don't think they get enough recognition and in order for them to GAIN more recognition, they gotta get out there on the STREETS and hit them parties/clubs... gotta show these listeners WHO YOU ARE and WHAT YOU CAN DO!

22. Where do you see the state of Hip Hop and/or Dance going in the next 5 years? Hip-Hop.... it has been BLOWIN' UP for the past 2-3 Years. Its CRAZY... remember the first time CRUNK music came out...everyone was like "what the fuck is this shit?" and now everyone's going "LIL JON LIL JON...okkKKaAayyy!! hhhhaaaunnnn" ITS MADDD CRAZY... honestly, GOD knows WHAT the future holds! Dance... there's always that group that loves dance music and will forever hold it and hug it ‘til they die. I don't spin dance/house music anymore because it’s not my flavor, but I STILL RESPECT that form of music along with other aspects. Back to Hip Hop...someone can only stand the CRUNK shit for sooo long.... but hey...who knows...we might come out with KRUNK music (just something more CRUNKier!)...lol

23. If you weren't mixing what would you be doing? WOW..that's a toughy...but I constantly think about that.... IF I DIDN’T join radio club in high school, I would probably be some outstanding student! lol... I ALWAYS had this thing for being a "WEATHER WOMAN"...I ALWAYS wanted to be on TV to give the weather report on the morning news/evening news.... Hey...what if I DID COMBINE the two.... I would be like "Yes folks, its going to rain, so if you check me out at my club tonight...ladies, be SURE to not wear you open toed-heels!"

24. What keeps you in the game? WOW.... I sometimes thought about steppin’ outta the DJ industry, but I look back and I see how far I made it.... From high school, jumpin’ from DJ crews, DJing clubs, working with different promoters, to DOING RADIO.... I just think about it...and I’ve gone THIS FAR to quit?? It wouldn't make any sense if I actually quit... it’s an opportunity to be on radio with my own MixShow and there is NOOO way to take it for granted.... And plus, its the best job ever... YOU GET PAID TO HAVE FUN?! What more can you ask for...

25. Are you in this for life? I will take it as far I feel I have accomplished what I have to accomplish.... what I have to accomplish? I DONT KNOW!!!....yeah, I'm sooo stupid... but lets see.... no, I am not in this for life... there is ALWAYS another DJ out there willing and ready to replace me... but I will push and strive hard to keep my shit locked down! Never take anything for granted....

26. Any thoughts on Hip Hop getting involved in the political game? You mean like Jay-muthafuckin-Z running for NYC Mayor??? I bet if he DID run, he would win... half those young kats would vote.... wow, just imagine... his whole crew in office?! (okay, just another random thought inside TEASE's HEAD)

27. Anything else you would like to share? WOW, is this my SHOUTOUT PAGE?! hehehhe.... First of all, I would like to thank MIXMATTERS.COM for giving me the opportunity to be featured as their DJ and always treatin' me with much love and respect. Next, to My FAMILY (Mom & Daddy including my lil' brother, John, for supporting me every step of the way), the Rest of my Other Family (cousins - Irene&Elena, Patty&Fam, Dennis&Fam, Arnel&Arlynne, Frances&Andre, Cherilyn&Fam, Edwin&Fam, Leo&Teresa, Angel&Jet, DJay&JayR, James, Christina/Jerry/JunJun; All Aunties and Uncles especially Auntie Fortune and Uncle Perfecto), to my whole KDON FAMILY - Dennis Martinez (PD), Alex "the B-DuBB" Carrillo (MD/MixShow Coordinator), the ON-AIR JOCKS that blow up all the KDON QuickMixers (Morning Show – Sam "Diggs"/ShowBiz"/ Boy-Toy Bobby, Eric "the Funky One", Mari D, Lejah, Fredo, and my Personal Jock "Jay Stylez"), the REST of the Quick Mixers (Christylz, Steve Aldea, Remedy, Rich Laxamana, Kaos, Contagiouz, Episode, Julian, Leethal, Romeo, Jaeson Villareyes, Jun-Bug, Crook), RecKid, Delic, Bigg Bear, Rambro, My Inspirations (Jazzy Jim, Majestichris, Mixtress (my sis), and especially Scotty Fox), JV and Raw Entertainment, The Girls in DOSE, The Boyz at UltraSounz, Higher Elevation Productions (1st Generation - Pross/Raymond/John/Mark), My Best GirlFriends (Kacey, Megan, Joyce, and Aileen) and EVERYONE ELSE that I have met and helped me, supported me, and pushed me to go the distance...I THANK EVERYONE of you!

Thank you again for your time. NO NO, thank you!

How "DJ TEASE" got her name? Welllllz, its such a long name trivial game story. First of all, my FULL NAME is Maria Teresa Agustin. Secondly, during my early years, my family combined both my first names calling my "Maritess". Then thirdly, during the beginning of my teenage years, they shortened it and called me "Tess", but growing up, in school, I have always used "Teresa". Finally, when my best friend and I were trying to come up with a DJ NAME, we were playin around with the letters of my name "TERESA, TESSA" and the song "Touch Me, TEASE Me" by Case came on and **POOF** my DJ Name was Born… "DJ TEASE"… for one, I totally love it because it sounds girly and two, I’m VERY flirty by nature! Just give me a couple of shots and I’M YOURS BABBBBY! *wink*
