DJWags Picks May 18 2006
Hello fellow Downtempo BeatFreaks! Where has your favorite DJWags been all these months anyway, you ask? Good question indeed. Well unfortunately I have been involved very heavily in my other career as a Video Specialist and have been away from the decks for a bit longer than I would like. But I could not stay away any longer and I have of course been scouring the globe for all the best downtempo goodness that I can find. So I might as well share some of my finding with ya’ all here and now. I am going to mix it up a bit here and jump around, as I do from time to time. Being the Eclectic collector/selector that I am. I am cursed with the unquenchable desire for almost all kinds of music. Most of the music I tend to dig for and enjoy, also usually falls into the “Downtempo” pile. I feel that downtempo can be many different genres and styles of music, as long as it all culminates in the right mood and spirit that I feel that I would qualify as downtempo. If you can chill to it, and it provides you with a sense of calm and chillasiousness (okay, so I invent a word from time to time… so what!) It is all-good.
I am often known as the “Hectic Eclectic”. Eclectic yes, Hectic?… that is a matter of opinion I guess. If you know me than you may have your own label to attach. All said and done I listen to all sorts of music and your lucky enough to have access to my crazy picks here on mixmatters.
There is a certain woman out there who makes my heart skip, and swell as much as any music I have ever heard. Thank you for that, and know that you are incredible!
Okay, Okay, sorry I had to do that.. on with the good stuff:
Fink
“Biscuits for Breakfast” 2006 Ninja Tune Records
Very different from his last outing “Fresh Produce” way back in 2000, Fink has obviously dug much deeper into his guts for this one. Most of the tracks on this record have a wonderfully stripped down ‘live’ production quality to them, a sort of playing in the subway or on the street corner sort of vibe. It really works well with his gravely, Soulful, and Bluesy groves. Track 6 is a stand out for me, “Biscuits” – this track is one of those sexy cool racks that is so cool you will feel cool yourself just listening too it. He has such a great attitude in his vocal style, it stands out from the pack. Laid back and groovy you can’t help but feel more than a bit chilled out. Another stand out is track 1 “Pretty Little Thing”. Great offbeat riffing drum beat under a sweet acoustic slapping and thumping guitar rhythm that dances along with his sexually charged vocals. Fink seems to have been listening to a lot of great old blues and soul records, and combined with his already accomplished downtempo style, this is a real treat. This record is something very special, one of the best of 2006 for me so far! Zero7 fans will want to pick this one up.
