Thievery Corporation "The Outernational Sound"
ESL 2004 eslmusic.com
|
|
The Outernational Sound is FAR OUT! Garza and Hilton have done it again. These guys have a great ear for groovy tunes the world over. The mix here is very well done. All songs flow in and out of each other extremely well. Some very rare tracks in this comp. As well. These Guys have turned me on to more great music than I could keep track of and they are still doing it. All this and they run the always consistently awesome ESL Music Label out of Washington DC. If you get to D.C. be sure to head to the Eighteenth Street Lounge for some snazzy cocktails (Garza's fave. Is the Mohito!) And check out the OUTRENATIONAL SCENE. Big Ups to the Corporation!

Neil Cowley of Zero7 and Ben Mynott of Blues and Soul deliver another beautiful record of Cinematic Blissed out Downtempo Tracks. They include a few more ŒVocal Tracks this time around but mostly instrumentals, as is their usual style. I listen to this record and imagine a film soundtrack for a hip spy movie. Like possibly a remake of "In Like Flint" anyone? Maybe the original is still too cool for a remake huh? What I am gettn&Mac226; at is that these guys should be doing Film Scores it would be perfect! If anyone is listening...

This 12" single is a regular in my sets these days. Ben Watt does a skillful job of utilizing the soulful feel of the original while also adding a compelling booty Shakn' Funky Deep House Groove throughout. People stand up and take notice every time I drop this one, that is no lie! Ya hear me?!!

Sia "Clour the Small Ones"
Universal Internationa 2000 (*import)

Lovin' this one! Sia is not only one of the key ingredients to Zero7's success but also has been busy with solo projects. This woman can SING! I haven't been this moved by a female vocalist since way back in my teens when I first heard Sade. Sia has depth and soul to spare. Highly recommended it isn't just good it's good for the soul! Her previous record back in 2001 was called "Healing Is Difficult" this one had a more "Urban" vibe - also great, but this recording is like a warm breeze over your shoulder. Ever get Goosebumps even when it's warm outside? Listen to this one and you will finally be able to say you have. Zero7 fans will love it!

Sia "I Drink To Get Drunk"
Different Gear Remix 12" (*import) Phantom 2001

Again I am lovn' this woman! This is a bit harder to find. A 12" import single from the UK back in 2001. Different Gear does a fantastic remix of I Drink To Get Drunk. Soulful Deep House grooves that will move butts out on the floor. Sia is in there quite a bit with her clever lyrics and soulful vibe.
What can I say I play it almost every Friday night in my set.
So Dig people, it is out there and you should heed my call to find it!

This is another really great band that is coming out of the UK these days. It seems as though many of the best new groups are from the small towns off the beaten track.
I think this has something to do with the freshness of bands like Snowpatrol, Muse etc... Keane formed in 97 while in school together and quickly got attention with the strong optimistic tunes they were coming up with it wasn't too long before they were signed to do a single and it took off from there. Sounding like the best parts of other great UK pop groups like Coldplay , South, and Travis Keane adds their own spin on this genre of Pop Rock. Usually I would use that term as a bad thing not here. The track that stands out for me is "She has no time". A sweeping, heart breaking perfect pop song that you will find yourself listening to over and over again. Loving it more each time. I even hear a bit of A-ha in there too. Tom Chaplin has a bit of that quality to his voice. I know that this one is off the beaten track but as you know I do that from time to time. I think these guys are going to be around for a while.

What Can you say about Cottonbelly? He is Cool; in fact in Webster's Dictionary under the word cool is his picture. Who is Cottonbelly? Well since you asked his name is Stuart Matthewman. Yep he is the guy behind many of Sade's hits as well as the creative force behind the group Sweetback as well. (Sweetback has been around for almost 10 years and consists of Sade's band basically... good stuff by the way. Might want to go get that one too).
Cottonbelly's new release is his first full-length record and a godsend to anyone who has missed any of his wonderful remixes over the years. It also includes a few tracks from some of his soundtrack work. Yeah he does wonderful work as a Film Music composer also! By the way he is also a Master of the Martial Arts as well. Anything he can't do? Guess not.
Hats off to Cottonbelly!

Zero7 VS Mos Def "Umi Says" remix
Unreleased Promo - DJ use Only! 2004
(*Black Label Bootleg)
|
|
A few years ago Mos Def and Zero where both guests on my hero Gilles Petersons Radio1 program. Well Gilles managed a remix that he aired on that show which has been circulating around the Internet. I have not played it in my sets because of the 'call outs' that are in the recording from the show. Well now it seems that someone has been kind enough to release this as a Black label DJ Only 12". I love this track! So smooth and sweet. Any self respecting downtempo fan should have this in their bag.
I found it at Amoeba Records in San Francisco so I am sure it is out there if you look for it.
