DJWags Picks August 26 2003
Hey there all my Downtempo Beat Head Amigo's!
It has been awhile since my last picks, I know. DJWags has been preoccupied as of late with a big move up to the beautiful city of San Francisco! So if you live in the Bay Area keep your eyes peeled for the DJWags. In fact you may be able to catch up with me at a sweet little joint on Fillmore st. in the Marina District called, "Matrix Fillmore" It is a great Downtemo/Midtempo Lounge that is perfectly suited for an upscale cocktail sippin' Downtempo music viben' Comfortable chair Loungen' person such as yourself. I've been known to "sit in" there with my good Pal DJ Shissla from time to time. Who you should definitely check when you can, cause he can "work that shit OUT" the heads are bobbn' in the Joint when DJ Shissla and the Wags get together...GOOD TIMES!

Enough of the silly banter, let's get into it . I've been spinning some really great stuff since my last picks, so much to choose from it was hard to settle on a few, but here goes...
Minus 8 "Minuit"
Compost Records 2003
Another wonderful slice from Minus 8. He (Robert Ja Mayer) really runs the Gamut on this one. Downtempo grooves to Midtempo Bossa flavored drops and, on into some really funky Deep House Vibes. Minus 8 is reaching out on this record expanding his sound and showing there is much more depth in his soul than drum and Bass. There are lots of real instruments on this record. It all shows and I for one appreciate it. One of the strongest records on the Compost label this year!
Calm featuring Spiritual African Nova "Shadows of the Earth"
Exceptional Records 2001
This one may be hard to find but look for it. I have been mixing this one in for awhile now and it is always a crowd pleaser. Sultry Moody sounds with African percussion work blend very nicely on this record. Some of this recording is almost ambient in it's feel but the other half of the record fit's in great with the likes of Thievery Corporation, Buscemi, or Jazzanova to name a few. the Producer of this gorgeous music is from Japan (Farr) where there is a great movement in african and Brazilian jazz influenced electronica. Kyoto Jazz Massive to name one. Calm is putting out several new compilations called "new street sounds" they are only available as imports right now but very sweet as well.
Dorothy Ashby "Afro Harping"
Cadet Records -1968 (reissued on Verve)
OK here is another oldy but a goodie. i have lot's of these older "Soul Jazz" recordings and I have a great time mixing them into a set. this one in particular is perfect. dorothy was way ahead of her time here. If you have not had the pleasure of hearing her groove on the Harp...well suffice it to say you should get this record into your collection right away! she was very popular as a session musician as well in the late 60's and early 70's as well. Stevie Wonder, for one, saw fit to use her talents in a few of his songs. So you may already have heard her drop a few notes and didn't even know it. Dorothy Ashby has a few records available as reissues now, but this is the one to start with.
Buscemi vs Calexico "Crystal Frontier" 12" remix
Virgin Records 2002
This is one of the best midtempo dance cutz i have ever heard! If people aren't movin' on this track...call an ambulance dude, cause they are near dead! I mean come ON! this mix is too good. I am wearin' mine out. If they aren't bobbn' there heads Slap this one down and you'll have them in the palm of your hand. Perfect blend of housey Latin flavored beats and melody. as Stan Lee used to always say..."Nuff Said"
Hird "Keep Your Hird" 12" remix
DNM Records 2003
Get it, Get it, Get it!
*also on the very solid "Nordic Lounge" comp on the same label (might be easier to find)

oh and did I already say, GET IT!
Break N' Bossa vol. 6 - *Comp
Schema Records 2003
I know, I know...another compilation from DJWags, I can't help myself! Where else are you going to find so many cool cutz in one place? Get this comp...pick a few tracks that really get your "BONE" and, then go out and purchase the 12". I have been turned on to more great music from this Break n' Bossa series than any other compilation out there to date. Schema knows they shit bro'. Take it from the Wags on this, if it has a Schema label on it and, you have liked ANY of my previous "Picks"... just get it.ok? Again,.."Nuff Said"

Well that's it for now folks. 'till next time, see you in San Francisco! and I'm Out.
