Goldfrapp "Black Cherry"
2003 Mute Corporation
goldfrapp.co.uk
As I have already made clear I am a huge fan of this Band. This record did not disappoint me. They are going in a very interesting direction on this one. It has a great 70's analog synthpop vibe to it. Not unlike Gary Numan, or early Kraftwerk. Alison's voice is complimented well by Will Gregory's inspired escapist/ dreamy style. Alison designed the album cover as well. They have definitely steered away from the French and Italian Film soundtrack sound of the 60's that was so beautify represented on the last record. I am actually glad as much as I miss it I can always listen to the last record. So many bands get stuck in a rut with their music that after awhile you can't tell which record you are listening too. This does not seem to be a problem for Goldfrapp. They still have the signature feel they always had but are taking it and running. Love it!
P.S. Don't miss the single "Train" either. Track #3 "Big Black Cloud, Little white lie" stands out.
Jakatta "Visions"
2002 Rulin Records/ Ministry of Sound
www.jakatta.info
A great record! Jakatta has an early nineties vibe that I can't quite put my finger on but, it is too busy tapping to the great Deep vibes to care. There is a good mix of Midtempo and dreamy Downtempo tracks here for all you loungers to contend with. No need to get up. Relax and put your feet up.
Fragile State "The Facts and the Dreams"
2002 Bar DeLune
This is a record by two of the guys we all love so much from "Zero7" Neil Crowley and Ben Mynott. It has a great Lush Soulful vibe. This album was very well produced as well. Slip on a pair of Big Fat Headphones; find your most loungey chair and Chill Out. You deserve it, we all do.
Kings of Convenience "Versus" (Comp.)
2002 Astralwerks Records
This is a remix compilation of Kings of Convenience songs from the album "Quiet is the New Loud" and has been out for a while now. I just found it and I listen too it constantly. I found the Royksopp remix a bit ago off the Chris Coco compilation "Acoustic Chill" that I reviewed in a previous "Picks" on Mixmatters. I loved that track and it is on this record. As well as many other great treatments by: Bamboo Soul, Ladytron, Andy Votel, and Four Tet just to name a few. This is a great record to pop in on a long late night drive to see some wondrous event like a meteor shower or to go surfing under the full moon - or just put it on and have some sex.
Massive Attack "100th Window"
2003 Virgin Records
MassiveAttack
100thWindow
Another masterpiece from Massive Attack. I think these guys were the first taste I ever got of what I had hoped for in Downtempo music. This is a Darkly Beautiful work of art and all of us should sit quietly in front of it contemplating life and love and most of all Respect. That is the least we can do.
Sigur Ros "( )"
2002 PAIS Recordings/ MCA (Germany) -2002
sigur-ros.com
Here is my "Off the beaten track" pick of the week. I just saw this band perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles and I am still moved by the event I witnessed there. It left me feeling a deep sadness and a great sense of hope at the same time. Not to detract from their genius in any way but, have you ever had a Vodka and Red bull (or several of them)? After a while you get that "warm sleepy I would love to curl up and take a nappy" kind of feeling but you also can't seem to stop talking long enough to do so? Sigur Ros was like that. At least live. Like an audio "Eight Ball". Fast and slow at the same time. Their album is similar but has a much more mellow vibe. The songs flow over you with much more subtlety and grace that holds on to you and lets you know life is hard but it will all work out all right.
Tosca "Dehli9"
2003 G-Stone Recordings/ !K7 Records
Finally! I can't say enough about Richard Dorfmeister. I have been a fan of Kruder & Dorfmeister for many years. Tosca if you didn't already know, is the other half of K&D. Along with his partner in Crime Rupert Huber (who is a film score composer and fine musician in his own right -of the two discs in the record one is his film score music); Dorfmeister makes a great record here. Deep Funky Bass with the signature Dubby beats make for a sure winner for all you Downtempo groovers out there.
Weekend Players "Pursuit of Happiness"
2003 Multiply Records / ffrr records
This is a side project for Andy Cato (Groove Armada) who it seems longed to make more music with lyrics. He teamed with Rachel Foster on this record who has a wonderful voice and, does a great job with writing the lyrics on the record. Many sweet slow groovers here with just a few dance tracks (is that a bad thing?) The whole record has a catchy pop vibe to it but in a good way.
Stereo Deluxe One "Deluxe Collection de Prelines Stereo" (Comp.)
2003 Stereo Deluxe Records
Another great compilation from Stereo Deluxe. There are several worthy Groovalicious tracks here to enjoy and the record packaging looks like a candy box so - DIG IN!
